The continental machine

Where a club plays in Europe next season is not a matter of invitation, form or reputation. It is a lookup. Take the association’s rank in UEFA’s five-year coefficient table, take the club’s final league position — or its domestic cup — and the access list returns the competition, the entry stage and the path. Arsenal’s title and Celtic’s title are the same domestic achievement; the list sends one straight into the Champions League league phase in September and the other into a play-off in early August.

The spread is the story. England’s champion plays zero matches to reach a league phase. A champion from the ranking’s lower half plays eight — four two-legged qualifying rounds starting the first week of July — and a defeat anywhere along the way rarely ends the European season: it drops the club one rung down the ladder. Everything below follows deterministically from two numbers.

Pick an association and read its league table as a departure board: one row per berth, straight from the access band its rank falls into. Then hand the domestic cup to a club that already qualified through the league and watch the cascade — the cup berth passes down the table, deterministically, with nobody’s permission required.

The same season, the same double. Manchester City and Celtic each finished their league in a Champions League place and won their domestic cup — and the identical achievement, run through two different ranks, produced nine English clubs in Europe against five Scottish ones, four of them starting in July qualifying.

The access list is the machinery behind everything above: a published grid that maps every association rank from 1 to 55 to a set of berths — which league positions and which cup winner enter which competition, at which stage, on which path. It is not a seeding of clubs but of countries: a club’s own history is irrelevant to where it enters; only its finishing position and its flag matter.

The list runs two seasons behind the football. The ranking published in summer 2025 — five seasons of results, 2020/21 through 2024/25 — fixed the access list for 2026/27. A great European campaign this autumn buys nothing next summer; it pays out the summer after. Scotland is living both sides of the lag at once: ranked 14th in 2025, its champion enters the 2026/27 play-off round — but the 2026 ranking already has it 18th, so the same title will be worth only a second-qualifying-round start in 2027/28.

What follows is the default list — the table as printed, before any season’s rebalancing. In practice titleholder berths, European Performance Spots and suspensions shuffle the entries every year; the rules that do the shuffling come after the table.

The printed list assumes every berth is claimed by a club that needs it. Every summer some are not — a cup winner already qualified, a titleholder with a domestic berth, an association suspended — and six standing rules redistribute the slack. None of them involves discretion: each names its trigger and its beneficiary in advance.
